Challenges of Building and Managing a Team in Gods Unchained

23/08/2025by JFA

In the article "Collective Power: The Potential of Teams in Gods Unchained" I addressed the role that teams could play in the future of Gods Unchained. We talked about how positive it would be to have official team support from Gods Unchained and the benefits that something like this could bring. Of course, the road is not easy: Behind every successful team there is a huge amount of enthusiasm, effort and time . I'm JFA, founder of GU Masters, and today I want to talk to you about the hidden side of glory: the real challenges of successfully building and managing a team in an ecosystem like ours.

As you know, it's not just about playing better or worse... as in any collaborative initiative, and a team is, Building a well-functioning organization is a commitment that demands leadership and organization . If you've ever considered forming your own "tribe" or joining one, or if you're simply wondering how these groups work from the inside, I trust this analysis gives you a realistic perspective.

A key idea? Commitment

Why is it that in the world of gaming To be part of some teams is nothing more than a mere hobby, while belonging to others requires professional dedication? The answer seems obvious: as I pointed out in the article mentioned in the first line of this post, a team can pursue very different goals. Therefore, a clear definition of these objectives is crucial, as is that all members of the group are aligned with them. And that alignment translates into commitments, as is natural... All team members must be aware of their rights and obligations .

If you're wondering what those commitments are, here are three Examples to give you an idea.

Temporary dedication

A team of amateurs will be satisfied with its members following the activity of the group and participating in its initiatives on a timely basis. In contrast, a competitive team will require a much stricter time dedication that may include Playtesting Weekly Deck Analysis, Game Review, and Tournament Preparation. When the objective is to become professional, the game ceases to be a hobby and it becomes a responsibility; On the other hand, when teams are not professionalized, maintaining a training discipline without burning out players or making the game feel like an obligation is a challenge.

Roles and responsibilities

In a team with a lighthearted approach, it is possible that all members (or rather some of them) do a little of everything. However In a team with more ambitious goals, there should be specialized roles (contemplating aspects such as captaincy, tenure or substitution, etc.). Some members will be in charge of issues 100% related to sports performance (analyzing the goal, designing and testing decks, offering coaching, performing post-mortem analysis of games, etc.), while others will be dedicated, totally or partially, to management aspects (coordinating training sessions, selecting tournaments, recruiting new members, managing communication or institutional relations of the team, looking for sources of financing, etc.).

Coordination and strategy

Decision-making in a professional team can obey a hierarchical structure or be the result of consensus. In any case, team members are expected to act in a disciplined manner. On the other hand, in a team with different approaches, the dynamics may be different, but Coordination will always be essential .

When due attention is not paid to all of the above, the Friction between reality and expectations it ends up taking its toll.

The Art of Organization: The Guild Bureaucracy

A team is still an organization and Any organization needs that: Organization (excuse the redundancy). In short: for a team to work, it is essential to be clear about how it is going to work.

Define the approach

Before taking any steps, it is advisable to have an answer to the question "what kind of equipment do you want? A competitive machine that is only looking for victory? A group of friends having fun and socializing? Or a Streamers and content creators? A well-defined approach is the magnet that attracts the right people and, more importantly, the glue that prevents the team from being dispersed due to a lack of common objectives.

Roles and responsibilities

A priori, it is not necessary for all members of the team to be elite players. A team needs leaders, recruiters, community managers, analysts, etc. When responsibilities are assigned, not only does it increase efficiency, but it also contributes to the Each member feels like a vital part of the project .

Rules and ethics

A Internal Code of Conduct it is essential to minimize the risk of conflicts arising. How are decisions made? What is expected of each member? Setting these standards early on creates an environment of respect and seriousness.

Strategy coordination

This is crucial for competitive play . Who analyzes the meta? Are decks shared among members? Strategic coordination is one of the main differences between a group of good players and an elite team.

Consolidation of the activity

Starting a new project is always the hardest thing, but that's not to say that keeping it alive is easy. For a team to consolidate, it is essential to take the right steps .

Recruitment and onboarding

How to attract members who might be a better fit for the project? Competing for talent is always complicated and even more so when the Pool of talent is limited. And once the signings start coming in, how do you retain that talent? The process of Onboarding (integrate new members) is crucial. It's not just about giving them access to the team's Discord, but about making them feel like they're part of something big from day one.

Member Loyalty

Players, no matter how committed they are, can lose interest. Loyalty is not just about winning; is building bonds that transcend the game itself . Celebrating achievements, both in and out of the arena, and creating an atmosphere of camaraderie are key to making the team not just a place to play, but a place to return to again and again.

Output management

This is an inevitable question. Sooner or later, some members will leave, either due to changes in their life circumstances or loss of interest in the game. The way a team manages these departures says a lot about their professionalism. It is more than advisable to say goodbye in a friendly and respectful way , holding the door open. In the future, a former member can become a great ambassador for the team... a policy of Alumni A successful one can work wonders.

Professionalization of management?

This is the ambition of many teams and hopefully this will be possible in the future of Gods Unchained. We are talking about having a paid management team, a quality technical team and a staff with the right incentives. We are talking, in short, about the team becoming a Fully professionalized activity . This requires skills that go far beyond knowing how to play well, as is obvious.

The human factor and the importance of leadership

Managing a team in Gods Unchained is not a trivial matter. It goes far beyond the cards, strategies, or prizes of a tournament. It is a Leadership Challenge at its best.

A good Team Leader It doesn't have to be the best player, but someone capable of managing the time, personalities, and goals of a group of people. He is the one who builds the structure, defines the approach and, above all, keeps morale high in both victory and defeat.

In the end A team is nothing more than the sum of its parts (and those parts are people.) Conflicts, disappointments, and egos can blow up a team from within if not managed correctly.

  • Conflict management and resolution: Disagreements about which deck to play, a bad play, or a failed strategy are inevitable. A good leader is not the one who avoids conflict, but the one who knows how to manage it constructively, making the team learn from its mistakes and grow.
  • Stay motivated: Victories are easy to celebrate, but defeats can be devastating. A leader's ability to keep morale high after a losing streak is critical. You have to remember why the team was formed in the first place and focus on long-term growth, not just immediate results.

Conclusions

Despite all the challenges that we have been unraveling throughout this article, for many it is an effort that is worthwhile. Teams are the heart of the community, the place where friendships are forged and where players can reach their full potential. I'm convinced that while the technology and mechanics of the game are important, what will really make people grow Gods Unchained they are the human bonds that are woven around it.

So, if you are a team leader, my sincere admiration. If you're thinking of creating one, I hope this article serves as a reference. And if you're just a gamer, I hope you know how to value in its fair measure the work behind each "tribe" .
