On this day the Gods Unchained team has introduced changes to some of the available Divine Powers . Sounds interesting? I bet you do. I'm JFA, the driving force behind GU Masters, and I invite you to join me to find out all the details about this update.
What are the reasons for these changes?
Let us remember that the raison d'être of the Divine Powers It's simply providing utility to residual mana (the one that couldn't be consumed in a more useful way in a turn), but they shouldn't be overly relevant. A common example of this idea of over-relevance is the design of archetypes around a given Divine Power.
Bryn, who is responsible for the mechanics and card design of Gods Unchained, explained that these changes respond, above all, to the need to avoid the enormous impact on the metagame of the existence of Divine Powers that have the ability to generate infinite value with very significant variability .
It is true that after these changes there are still Divine Powers that generate infinite value, such as those that summon creatures, but in that case the effect of each activation of that Power is invariable throughout the game and its impact is reduced, at least a priori, as mana is unlocked with the progress of the turns and it is possible to play cards of higher cost. In contrast, the Divine Powers that have ceased to be available could yield decisive results for the outcome of the game , especially in the case of Thievery because it allowed you to choose, through the mechanics Delve , depending on the needs of the moment (and also considering that low-cost cards tend to have more power than they would have due to their mana cost).
Bryn has also clarified that his goal is for these changes to contribute to Reorient meta dynamics in the medium term, so that it evolves from a "combo-centric" meta, which has not been well received by the gaming community, to a more "board-centric" meta oriented to interactions between creatures.
What changes have been made to the Divine Powers?
As reflected in the official announcement on the Gods Unchained blog ( "Update: God Powers, Nov 2024" ), the Changes implemented, sorted by Domain, are as follows.
Deception
Thievery is replaced by Guild Dagger . Mana cost scaled from 3 to 2 and triggers the following effect: "equip a 1/2 Improvised Dagger with Godblitz and Flank .
It seems like the change with the most immediate impact on the metagame, ending Thievery's reign in alternative game modes to Ranked Constructed. Some Deception archetypes, such as tribal decks Guild , will undoubtedly be weakened.
Flip Go to "Shuffle two cards into your deck. Then draw a different card for each card shuffled."
Pay attention to this change, as it will give greater consistency to control and combo archetypes (pay attention to Mayday).
Light
Radiance It is renamed to Bestow and its effect is to give +1/+1 to the Chosen One.
As is evident, the objective of this change is to reinforce the archetype Chosen One .
Magic
Overcharge Have their mana cost reduced from 2 to 1.
I guess the million-dollar question is... will this reduction in cost make this Divine Power go to use? I have my doubts, knowing the usefulness and versatility of Magebolt .
Nature
Create it is replaced by "Selena's Mark". Its mana cost is reduced from 3 to 2, with the effect ". The card's text reads, "deal 1 damage to a random enemy creature."
This change would reinforce the more "controlling" archetypes, but the reality is that right now Animal Bond is preferable for this type of archetypes because this power makes it much easier to activate the Dreadtouch effect with cards such as That Which Feeds Us, Regression, Crawlind Madness, Dread Deer, etc. (something that is important for Control Nature) and generate creatures (important for Mutations and, tangentially, to Food Chain ). It is worth wondering if the Amazon tribal decks could opt for this option.
What is your assessment of these changes?
I'm going to "get wet": My assessment of the changes that have been implemented is positive . On the one hand, the impact of Create and Thievery was enormous, especially in alternative formats to Ranked Constructed; on the other hand, it is always positive to try to "reposition" the less popular divine Powers, since greater diversity enriches the possibilities offered by the game and brings diversity. And you, what do you think of this God Power refresh ?
